I'm surprised nobody has commented that the other guy's side of the story is missing. Maybe his anger wasn't provoked by the difference of opinion, but rather the interruptions, or something else. Maybe OP was shouting and using profanity or something else. Maybe there's a history preceding this particular day that affected what happened. Sure doesn't sound like anything happened that justified pounding on the OP. But blocking his exit might indicate remorse and apology, and the OP may have been the one who wasn't listening at this point, and possibly at points before that.
