What is people's obsession with pointing out that someone golfs? It makes me cringe. It's like pointing out that someone exercises everyday.

It's classism.

Golf is culturally viewed as a white collar rich person sport. When a person points out that someone golfs, they are trying force a "us & them" separation onto the person being spoken too. In OP case, it was design to cause division between OP and Trump to weaken any link there may be.
