He wants to show the jury who he's rooting for so he won't have to direct a verdict.

Not a likely motive when he sends the jury out beyond hearing when he rakes the prosecution over the coals. I agree with Darwyn. He is letting the prosecution make its whole case so there will be little basis for an appeal of a directed acquittal.
