I've heard that the largest asset owned by the catholic church is the land.. all the catholic churches, schools, seminaries, retreats and so on.. properties they get bequeathed to them in wills too. That was years ago and likely didn't touch on whatever shadow assets have a value but are not known.

Things like artworks, the contents of the vatican libraries, financial instruments.. and thats before really digging into the obscure.
