There were some decent arguments implicating that they became what they are today because they went against God and became cursed. Ham was the son of Noah who saw him passed out naked and made fun of his manhood or he had sex with his mother (there's some debate over what exactly happened) so Noah cursed Ham's youngest son Canaan because of it. Genesis 9:25 "And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren."
There have been some early Jewish and Christian interpretations of this as meaning Africans are descendants of Canaan and they were made to be everyone's slaves.
Edomites are cursed through the rejection of the Abrahamic seed. Different curse than the one I had in mind. Don't have the details available at the top of my head, though.
