Similar story, i was on a jury and the guy was most likely guilty, but i wanted some more discussion since we are bringing a man's life into the decision. So I asked for everyone to air any gripes they have about the decision. Took us a few hours instead of 10 minutes.
Perhaps they want to give the appearance of thoughtful consideration, even if they have their minds made up.
