You likely do know more than I - but see, this is exactly why I don't like the conventional wisdom theory. It falls far too neatly into the Kennedy entitled jerk trope.

But John really wasn't like that. His mom was on top of him. Despite the massive amount of attention the guy seemed actually pretty down to Earth. And careful. It's actually out of character for him to do this, although not out of character of the general Kennedy archetype.

That archetype can throw an undue bias into what we think happened. Perhaps we rush to accept things we should be skeptical about.
