Closely.
Now realize, that the mask is partially transparent, and that the camera flash shows the face underneath.
Then reconcile with the surrounding drops:

See through the mask.
WITAF are we even looking into the face of?

Id imagine things like viruses affect them different than us, for better or worse.
Id also think, if they are real, they are just modified regular humans. Whether from our time, or another time. Whether lab modified, or evolution, or both.
I just can't help but think of the movie 'Time Machine' based on HG Wells works.
Literally has pindar in the movie too...
