He first introduced NIAID's responsibilities, budget, key research areas, and its distribution and current situation of cooperative research in China and around the world, pointing out that NIAID has the dual tasks of "innovative knowledge tools" and "helping emergency response". He said that to find the best balance between seizing scientific research opportunities and meeting actual public health needs, NIAID has been working to strengthen global health cooperation research in areas such as vaccine research and development, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and malaria control, and Ebola infection control.
Director Gao said that the scientific research cooperation between the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and its predecessor and NIAID have gone through decades of trials and challenges, and have formed a good scientific research cooperation team and mechanism. It is very important to continue to maintain, especially for the research of emerging infectious diseases, and share information and exchange views in a timely manner. Secondly, it is recommended to strengthen both sides. Strategic-level vision planning, formulate research countermeasures on important scientific issues of common concern, coordinate resources, and ensure the correctness of the research direction; third, the two sides may consider jointly training scientific and technological talents for African countries and set up "sandwich" talent training projects, that is, students have the opportunity to study in China and the United States respectively. Learn from technology and experience, carry out on-site practice in the country, etc. Director Gao agreed with Director Fauci's proposal to strengthen the long-term cooperative research of young American researchers in China and invited Director Fauci to discuss the above-mentioned cooperation strategy, cooperation on emerging infectious diseases and personnel exchange and training projects with Chinese partners in China since 2018.
The two sides also exchanged views on technical issues such as avian influenza, Zika virus disease, dengue fever and other epidemics and effective prevention and control measures.”
