Hello all, there has been a stream of conflicting views on the privacy of Proton Mail. Is there a Email service that has been agreed upon as being the most secure? thanks for your input.

There is no such thing as privacy on the internet. It is a lie. It doesn't exist. There is, somewhere, government entities that have everything that you have ever sent, received, said, listened to, read, watched...
Maybe there is a way to remain anonymous, but you won't find such answers here, and it takes a whole lot of effort. Much, much more than finding a "secure email" (which doesn't exist).
The best protection is to keep yourself safe from everyone except the super powers. Probably the best you can do against the super powers is live in a cave, no electronics, completely separated from society. When you come out of the cave stay to the trees to minimize satellite exposure. Other than that, just recognize that there is no privacy.
Before 2005 the government was spying on everyone all the time. After 2005 the government was spying on everyone all the time and it was totally legal. Just protect yourself from everyone else, forget about protecting yourself from "everyone." Protonmail is good against everyone else. That is sufficient.
