You and I are from different parallel universes. I distinctly remember my kindergarten teacher reading us Berenstain Bears books, pronouncing it BEAR-IN-STAIN, and me noting the spelling a few years later, maybe when my sister was of the age to read those. But since STEIN is a common ending for names, of course people less attentive would be likely to confuse it.
I’m going to look at my folks house on Thanksgiving and I’ll post what I find. I have some of the OG books I used to read as a child.
How about having conversations about why it's pronounced "Steen" instead "Stine" (as in Frankenstein)?
