In answer to your question, another question. Do you think a shorter work week and far faster transportation to spend more time with loved ones would make people happier? Given the current system, of course not since everything would be gated behind massive pay walls. However, eliminate the greed, graft, and corruption from the majority of society and most everything that grinds you down on a daily basis pretty much evaporates allowing you to spend time on what's important instead of simply what's necessary. I don't think we get to the tech without a corresponding improvement in society so ... win-win?
In answer to your question, I'll give an answer: Yes, I think a shorter work week would be wonderful. I do not think faster transportation will make that a reality though. Rather, I think ending the silly gating system you mentioned and addressing the greed, graft, and corruption would do that splendidly. Keeping all those evils in place, no new tech would save anything. Getting rid of all those evils, no new tech is necessary to achieve a more ideal existence.
Personally, I think a future reality with current tech but free of the corruption and general makey-workey of the modern day would result in a work week about 30 hours long that most people would spread over their preferred work days. Some would do 4 days while others would do 5 days and a few would do 6 days.
Pfft with current tech there’s no need for more than a 1 or 2 days work a week. We only currently need that much because almost all the money generated is stolen by governments / banks etc. With millennia of tech, how could we possibly still need to work just as much as our ancient ancestors?
