Well uhh, wasn't it Coca-Cola who kind of invented our "todays" Santa and before that, Santa was depicted in many ways depending on the Country of Origin?
Remember Santa Clause "stole" the Day of remembrance/celebration that was set aside for.. someone way more important than a fictional character. :P

Eh, I just remember that the, -red and white- Santa came about in Coca-Cola campaigns and all in the 1930's(?) and blew up from there and if you look at any older renderings he was often in rich colored, long robe and not the red/whie pants/jacket. Saint Nic pre, Santa Clause (though even today it is ol'Saint Nic" but, willing to bet, not something that is talked about much anymore)
