I've had this argument with a normie - I brought up concerns that we were going down the path of authoritarianism and lockdowns. They responded with this: I went to Florida and South Carolina and saw no lockdowns, and nobody here is preventing you from going grocery shopping either.
"Therefore there is no lockdown or problem and you are making a big deal out of nothing. You are talking as though this whole country went bad because Trump lost the election. You are exaggerating everything."
This affected me internally quite a bit because this came from somebody who used to be my best friend.
Not a single thing that has happened so far reported in the media has changed their stance. They've only doubled down on their stance. They only believe what the media reports and considers anything else crazy talk
I mean in terms of “lockdowns” the US has been pretty lax so I see their point. It’s not like you aren’t allowed to go outside. Last summer I drove out to go camping in national parks. In the grand scheme of things a vaccine is not a big deal, considering they’ve been regularly administered and required for people for years.
And then normies will use that as an example as to how we are still wrong. "There's no lockdown people can do what they want"
Don’t really understand your point…
