It's easy. just get OFF the camel, first!
BTW, I often see "mate" on GAW.
Is this an indication of a (fellow) aussie? Or has this proliferated on the net so that non-Aussies use this too?
I mean, traditionally, this is full on totally Aussie lingo, as far as I know.
F'ng oath, mate!
rofl. I mean, I'm aussie born, but my dad was an immigrant, and the mate thing never really caught on until I had my own lads.
Strewth, hard tell these days.
Mate, we are all immigrants in Aus. Even the "indigenous" came from somewhere else. Mine are Hungarian, English/Irish.
My Hungarian Grandfather used to tell a story about how one day one of his mates came to him worried about the next influx of immigrants into Australia. Saying "more bloody wogs are coming". My Grandfather looked at him and said in his thick Hungarian accent, "What do you mean? I am a bloody wog!" His mate looked at him and said, "No you're not, you're a bloody Aussie".
True, immigrants all. Although I strongly resonate with the OSTF's take that born in Australia = indigenous to Australia.
However, with the "immigrant" comment, I was just saying that for some reason, my dad never took to saying "mate!" like a lot of other aussies and new aussies, so it was not a strong feature in the house where I grew up.
