Real men didn't do a whole lot with their hair back then. I have photos of my grandfathers and great-grandfathers, and they all needed their hair cut and combed.

The severe look is because people had to stay still for a few seconds for photos back then. It's hard to hold a smile steady, so they didn't smile.
