Ewww, yeah, it stunk down there literally right?
They had fantastic amenities at Balad though. Four great difacs, gym, pool, Theatre, American fast food. Couldn’t have asked for a better place to be stationed.
It was that 👍🏽 The base in Tikrit, Spicher was pretty cool tho. Awesome DFAC. Sprawling area…we would launch our plane then go 4-wheeling in the back country. I loved the anti-mortar (Navy) radar-guided Phalanx system at Balad tho. Seen it shoot down many a mortar 👍🏽
Yeah, I think they referred to them as C rams. They were awesome to watch at night, like a string of red pearls across the sky. The area I lived in was formerly known as mortar-ritaville.
You ever get a warlock ied jammer system installed in any vehicles in Balad? I may have assisted in that if so. I didn’t do it a lot as that wasn’t part of my mos work there, but I helped several times when I didn’t have any thing going on.
Very cool 😎 I remember mortar-ritaville!! I was in Balad for only about 6 months before we moved to Tikrit so I didn’t explore Balad as much as I’d have liked. “C-Ram” was a great idea to move that system as a ground based defense system. I do recall the Humvee mods being done there tho…there was one they maxed-out if I recall wheels had spinners efc. Wasn’t it Jesse the car-mod guy came as a VIP and drove it around(?)
I was in Balad till we moved ops to Spicher/Tikrit. In Balad I was in trailers down by burn pit. Nasty!!
