Truth.
One of the things I wish I had listened to was to get to know the mother of my wife before I married her. Her mothers habits and way of looking at things - good road map to what the upbringing was. My wife is a clutter bug and it takes a toll on me mentally. She also didn’t have a dad around and feels generally threatened my masculinity shows. It’s wild watching her because she gets so uncomfortable - yet she is torn because my kids ( and especially my son ) respond to it rapidly and seem to crave it.
She still doesn’t get it so - not sure where to go. Divorce and my own non-cluttered space or not. I can’t martyr myself and stay sane - my kids don’t need to see that. She isn’t giving me much of a choice.
Ah now we get to the heart of it.
Being a father is accepting that you out your heart on a table very day even if it means they get half a bite and it’s all you have.
Then you wake up and do it all again.
No thanks expected or given - then one day it’s there in an unspoken respect nature provides.
I mean biodad. That’s the thing. As a dad you kinda dad on every kid you can.
When I was a kid growing up in the 80s - it a dad saw you outside or an old WW2 vet - whatever - you got called into a garage and taught how to make something. Clean a 2 stroke. Fix a weed whacker. Clean a bike right and regrease. Hell we got called in to do yards and clean flower beds.
