Taking the red pill vs blue pills was also originally an allegory about choosing whether to take hormone pills and transition as a transgender person, choosing the red pill (the popular drug at the time was iconically a red pill, there the idea came from) and wake up as their true selves as they saw it, vs the blue pill to continue to live in the world they have a deep feeling is wrong and not their true selves.
