There were some who knew what was going on. The tea party movement was popular at the time. But I think the majority at that time were truly captivated and enamored with him so much so that NDAA went through with barely a word of protest and the purchases made above were almost entirely not discussed.

I beg to differ on this one. The party was largely divided between Cruz and Trump nationwide, while some in Ohio clung on to Kasich because "it was the right thing to do".
In the end, Republicans were presented with Trump as "the better option over Hillary", and Mike Pence was picked as VP to sweeten the deal by making Trump appear less chaotic, but anyone who lived in Indiana at the time could tell you that Mike Pence has a chaos of his own.
