Until the current era, the Catholic church eschewed Masons. It has always been Catholic dogma that you cannot be both a Catholic and a Mason. Doesn't mean that many weren't both, but the teaching of the Church was that the Masonic temples promoted a contra-church, based on naturalism and satanism. It is true that below the 33rd degree, most Masons didn't understand the true goals of the organization they were part of.
