The Knights Templars were far from innocent, and were killed for their crimes, not for their riches.
The Knights Templars were publicly Catholic, but in private, they practiced Gnosticism, which ultimately involved worship of Satan .
Eliphas Levi is the famous French occultist who drew the well-known picture of Baphomet.
In his book HISTOIRE DE LA MAGIE (AKA History of Magic and written in French), Levi writes the following about the Templars (translated to English with translate.yandex.com so imperfect but clear enough)-
The Templars had two doctrines, one hidden and reserved for the masters, it was that of Johannism; the other public, it was [278] the Roman Catholic doctrine. They thus deceived the opponents whom they aspired to supplant, The Johannism of the followers was the kabbalah of the gnostics, degenerated soon into a mystical pantheism pushed to the idolatry of nature and the hatred of all revealed dogma. In order to achieve greater success and gain supporters, they stroked the regrets of the fallen cults and the hopes of the new cults, promising everyone freedom of conscience and a new orthodoxy that would be the synthesis of all persecuted beliefs. They went so far as to recognize the pantheistic symbolism of the great masters in black magic, and, in order to better detach themselves from obedience to the religion that condemned them in advance, they returned divine honors to the monstrous idol of Baphomet, as once the dissident tribes had worshiped the golden calves of Dan and Bethel.
Stricken with death in its very principle, and anarchic because it was a dissident, the order of the Knights of the Temple had conceived a great work that it was unable to execute, because it knew neither humility nor personal self-denial. Besides, the templars being mostly uneducated, and only able to handle the sword well, had nothing what it took to govern and chain if necessary this queen of the world who is called opinion. Hugh of Payens had not had the depth of [279] views that later distinguished a military founder also of a formidable militia to the kings. The Templars were poorly successful Jesuits.
Their watchword was to get rich to buy the world. They did indeed become so, and by 1312 they possessed in Europe only more than nine thousand seigneuries. Wealth was their stumbling block; they became insolent and allowed their disdain for the religious and social institutions they aspired to overthrow to break through. We know the word of Richard the Lionheart to whom a clergyman, to whom he allowed great familiarity, having said: "Sire, you have three daughters who cost you dearly and which it would be very advantageous for you to get rid of: these are ambition, avarice and lust.--Really! said the king: well! let's get them married. I give ambition to the Knights Templar, avarice to the monks and lust to the bishops. I am sure in advance of the consent of the parties.»
The Templars' ambition was fatal to them; their plans were too much to guess and they were warned. Pope Clement V and King Philip the Fair gave a signal to Europe, and the Templars, wrapped, so to speak, in a huge net, were caught, disarmed and thrown into prison. Never before has a coup been accomplished with a more formidable ensemble. The whole world was struck with amazement, and we waited for the strange revelations of a trial that was to have so many repercussions through the ages.
It was impossible to unravel the plan of the Templar conspiracy in front of the people; it would have been to initiate the multitude to the secrets of the masters. The accusation of magic was used, and [280] there were whistleblowers and witnesses. The Templars, at their reception, spat on Christ, denied God, gave the great master obscene kisses, worshiped a copper head with carbuncle eyes, conversed with a big black cat and mated with devils. That's what we weren't afraid to take seriously on their indictment. We know the end of this drama and how Jacques de Molay and his companions perished in the flames; but before dying, the head of the Templars organized and instituted the occult masonry. From the depths of his prison, the grand master created four metropolitan lodges, in Naples for the East, in Edinburgh for the West, in Stockholm for the North and in Paris for the South. The pope and the king soon perished in a strange and sudden way. Squin de Florian, the main informant of the order, died murdered. By breaking the sword of the templars, they had made a dagger out of it, and their forbidden trowels were no longer just tombs.
Let us now let them disappear into the darkness or they will hide and plot their revenge there. When the great revolution comes, we will see them reappear and we will recognize them by their signs and their works.
The Knights Templars were kabbalists who got caught in the act. And I believe Levi's account about De Molay organizing occult masonry before his execution.
After all, the Freemasonic youth order is named after Jacques de Molay (Bill Clinton was a member).
