They probably figured that since the cat is out of the bad as far as media control is concerned, might as well stop bothering with the pretense.

ugly and monstrous caricatures of humanity in an effort to beat down the spirit of people just that little bit more.

At first I didnt think this was real. I thought it was a scene from some dystopian movie.
