Joke is on them. We don't need our military for protection. Never did. Militaries are for offensive action and after this we need some massive restructuring and overhauls. A strong Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard are one thing. Maybe even some Marine contingents. But unless we're planning on colonizing the world, there is zero need of a standing army, an army that should be made up and represented by We the People. Something like the Swiss, except even more voluntary.
