I think some celebrities, when they’re tired of the life and are willing to retire, allow their ‘characters’ to die and they just slip back into normal life. This includes recent deaths like David Bowie, Prince or Tom Petty or even someone like Neil Peart. The musician no longer has to practice daily, keep in shape or even deal with fan letters or constant requests, etc. They just move on.
The music industry though can also make a fortune from musicians who ‘die’ at their peak but are also otherwise too strung out and broken to continue anyways. These are deaths like Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Bon Scott, Janice Joplin and so on. It’s better for business if they die than slowly fizzle out doing terrible gigs for 20 years. The whole 27 club really, which is probably only related to the end date of the contracts they sign with the record companies anyways.
Other recent deaths (and many others over time) like with Linkin Park or such are also quite convenient and unusual though.
