Mountain ranges normally help to insulate hot air masses,this map puts some little sense into it. Still, we can only speculate as to why the Rust Belt isn't being affected.
Highs in the upper 70's in the SouthEast this time of year do occur occasionally.
But I can't recall it ever lasting this long. Usually only lasts a few days.
Used to mid 50's and low 60's mainly, with some nights getting below freezing, but not usually until january. We are getting "california weather" in carolina (70s in the daytime, 30's at night).
