It’s pretty normal for the Third World because of their lack of interest in basic hygiene. Simply not defecating in their source of drinking water would pay large health dividends, but the people who live by the Ganges haven’t figured that out for the last five thousand years.

Not eating friggin’ bats would be a step in the right direction, too.
