Theoretically they own these shares on behalf of their investors. I know that there are some regulations involving control but on researching this it's worse than I thought.
Apparently the corporate governance rights conferred to shareholders is actually held by the investment management company, not the the investment managers nor the investors. I think this means that Black Rock management or Vanguard management actually gets to sit on the board of directories of the companies they invest in.
I'd really like to understand this better. If this is true, it's a horrific takeover of almost the entire publicly traded sector of our free markets.

They own everything. Media, groceries, tech, automobile, clothing manufacturers. Everything.
Type in any company any industry name on Yahoo fiance and check the holders tab. You will these names as top holders every time.
