Those dog microchips typically just contain the owners info, they aren't like a GPS tracker. Basically if the dog is found then a vet or a shelter can scan the chip to get the owners phone number, name, address, etc. and return the dog.
Your phone is already doing all of the things talked about in this thread, they don't need a microchip to do all this, LOL!!
That's the basic technology that's been in existence for a long time now. The technology capability is much more advanced.

I got rid of my spy phone over 2 years ago. LOL.
The microchip is going to be used as an ear tag. Your smart phone just receives and amplifies the signal until further technology leaves smart phones outdated..
You are not wrong. But think about wearable devices like fitbit etc that monitor your health and what their limitations are. Now think about a device that stays in your system and communicates with your phone and the possibilities. It's about continuous monitoring in the name of prevention. But as we know, that's not a sustainable business model.
