I’m not convinced that anyone can keep folks from doing what they’re gonna do, free will being what it is.
However, when I find myself depressed, I choose to UNPLUG. No more electronics. I go out and hike in nature, mountains, woods, beaches etc. Getting lots of sunshine and LOTS of exercise works every time.
If I can’t do that then I’ll completely immerse myself in a very intense creative project, like remodeling a part of my home or working on a landscaping project in the yard or reorganizing or just creating something.
Volunteering/helping those that have it worse than yourself always puts things in perspective. Animal shelters, soup kitchens, cleaning up litter...
If our situation has you down then don’t focus on it anymore. Change your focus and choose to place your attention on something where you can make things better, even if it’s small baby steps at first.
You can't prevent it, but you can throw them a lifesaver. Never a guarantee. But it's worth trying.
