I believe you are onto something. I blamed it on lack of preparation at first for the symposium being a bumpy ride (which i was able to forgive), but then things just started to get weird with Mike getting threatened and the office raid for the hard drives by the DA. I myself had a suspicion that CN was setting Mike up and trying to make him look bad intentionally.
