I agree with your premise but I am genuinely curious about an example of valuable anime. I wrote off the genre after seeing a few... non-valuable examples. Not trying to start a debate.

It'd be easier to suggest things by knowing what you saw that made you write off the genre (and also what language you saw it in, japanese, English dub, or another language dub)
