When I taught 5th grade, we had frank discussions about things like the triangular trade etc.
Oddly enough in all the notes I received when I left my student teaching, the kids mostly mentioned the lesson where I gave them "slave names" after explaining how this was done back then to dehumanize and demoralize the slaves. It was a,mixed inner city class. That had left an impression. I couldn't do it today.
We can't hide from history but we can't fabricate it either. That's why as an author I write nonfiction - the truth is way more unbelievable.
Not during that part of the unit but you could when it was appropriate for the curriculum. I.e. 5th grade wouldn't cover that but perhaps a middle school or high school level would go into civil rights Era and modern stuff etc.
Personally i am a fan of Stuart Hall and Gil Noble and urge everyone to watch their stuff. Noble did a program in the 80s called "like it is" i think, there's a great interview on YouTube called How the FBI Destroyed Black America. Something like that. Stuart Halls "race: the floating signifier" is also a pretty good intro to the topic.

Did you address contemporary issues?

Hahahaha. Your trolling has no powers here. Begone.
We can stop racism when we stop talking about it.
Like in the south when the police departments were Klan? Ok sure
I am not sure why you are spewing this bullshit. KKK was a democratic creation and was meant to stop Blacks from voting republican.
Are you lost ma’am
So you just pretend it isnt an issue then?
