Could be a number of reasons, and probably more than one:

-They realize Covid is now harming the Dems politically and will destroy their party beyond what they can possibly overcome by cheating.

-They're getting ready to 86 Joe, and they don't want their new President to be saddled with a pandemic.

-They realize that Omicron is killing their scary narrative.

-They have something even more sinister up their sleeve (another bioweapon that's worse, a nuclear war, etc, etc)
