It is real, but the Hydra shown is usually about the size of a quarter. They also live in water. Though they are immortal. You put one in a blender and as long as all the pieces can touch it can repair itself.

I think this is a genetically modified Hydra that can live in humans.

Could it be an experiment to see what it accomplishes in the human body? Immortality or lengthened lifespan?
