Unfortunately, the Mormon religion worships the wrong guy, Joseph Smith vs. Jesus. There are good people in all religions but if your religion expects you to shun your own family, you may be in a cult. I feel the same about some Amish. It's wrong to ask family to cut off contact with family just because the church doesn't like what someone has done.
The name of the Mormon church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The name literally says it's Jesus Christ's church. So no, we don't worship Joseph Smith just like we don't worship Noah or Moses or any of the other prophets that God has called over the millenia. We aspire to live as righteously as they did as we worship and serve God and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and oftentimes we fail because we are human, which is why everyone on earth has need of a Savior in the first place.
