We use football, from the ancient game played between towns (sometimes over miles and miles) with pig skin (or bladders). Originally, it was pretty rough, with many deaths per game (knifing and bludgeoning were common), played between two posts in different towns. Feet were sparsely used, you could pick it up and carry it (if you dared), but rules were light and violence common.
So yes, football. Either of our modern alternatives barely represent the gladiatorial nature of the game (but I can guarantee whatever happened, shoulder pads were never an intended consequence)
