i like how the government puts itself in between the victim and the perpetrator, and gets to decide what punishment, if any, is appropriate.

when Epstein for convicted the first time, the prosecutors gave him a sweetheart deal, and didn't even bother to run it by the victims, to see if the agreement was OK with them
