A building's most sound shape is 4 posts, one for each corner. This makes it easy to plot in 2D and allows you to have square corners that are modular 90°s.
interesting correlation. three posts/sides is the most stable building structure but difficult to plot/plan versus four. a fifth column would probably be best placed directly in the middle of the structure with all things being equal, no?
