It has to do with the Priory of Sion. The grandmaster of the Templars (now Freemasons) can only be appointed at the lodge in Jerusalem. The grandmaster of the templars used to be the same as the grandmaster of the Priory of Sion until "The Splitting of the Elm" in 1180 or so.
