From the article:

Former FBI assistant general counsel Kevin Clinesmith admitted to forging an email used to prepare an application to surveil former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page. Clinesmith was sentenced to probation for a single charge of making false statements related to the forgery.

So the charge is lying to the FBI? Not also a forgery charge? So I could rob a bank and get away with it and if I tell the FBI I didn't rob a bank and they found out I was lying, I just get charged with lying to the FBI?
