they can't mentally handle going there right now. They can't regret getting it. They subconsciously regret it, because the body knows it's in trouble.

But they can't let themselves admit it because to do so will admit they have done something terrible to themselves and were a fool of insurmountable magnitude.

In other words - DENIAL.
