Texan here. Although it is likely far better than the hellhole the OP is in, Texas makes up for the lack of a state income tax with property taxes. At least you have some clue where the money goes and you can choose where you live based upon the property taxes. The vast majority of the property tax I pay goes to the local school district. Though I no longer have school-aged children, I can see where my money goes. Also, watch out for MUD taxes. These also vary, depending on where you live.
