Owls are real birds. Plenty live around me although never seen one, only heard. So maybe it's comms, maybe it's just a story for kids.
A good approach would be to get a copy of the book then see if she puts in anything additional which is not in the book. That would definitely be comms. Can't see myself going to that amount of effort though.

My Aunt was not a satanist, and she loved collecting owls (not real ones) figurines, crochet owls, planters, etc. Who knows what her son did with all of them after she passed in 2005.
