IMO you got it. Instead of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with a happy ending it was Young Goodman Brown and they're all satanists. I wouldn't say his ego was shattered as much as his foundations & moorings. It's tough to climb back after losing your faith, he clearly did. This article though is good and on par with his much earlier digging.
