In related news I've been strongly contemplating getting my HAM license and a radio in the event of SHTF real bad. though, if shit hits the fan in a far worse way than expected, I suppose the license would probably not be necessary.

if / when SHTF you won't need a license. You'll only need a HAM Radio.
