For civilians to legally own a gun you need a gun license. This comes with a daily background check, and forfeiting the right to require a warrant for police to enter your property. For transporting a gun, you can travel with ammo, but you can only transport a gun directly between your home, a gun range, or where you're hunting. Stopping to do something like buy a bottle of water is illegal.
