In '75 my husband, 2 yr old child and myself spent a month traveling across Canada. NO passports. Just a drivers license. And a handgun and bullets in the glove box. Started from SC and entered Canada at Niagara Falls. Got up each morning and decided which way we wanted to go. Re entered the US in Montana. Only problem we had at borders was we could not bring the baby's food in. Had to buy from Canada and dump what was left when we came back thru MT.

Soon again, you can travel across Canada with your thumb (with a microchip).
