Just started reading the article but Bari Weis’ jewish bias is jumping off the page. She plays up the positives:
“It was about this massively lucrative industry that had been birthed by outsiders and emerged, out of lemon groves, into a glamorous, glitzy mosh pit teeming with chutzpah”
She downplays the negatives: “And then there were the villains: The vast majority—from the Terminator to Hannibal Lecter to Gordon Gekko—were uber-white: an Austrian (robot), a Lithuanian, a WASPy, pinstriped capitalist.”
In Wall Street, Gordon Gekko makes disparaging remarks about WASPs. I haven’t seen it in a few years, but I believe there’s a line or two that more overtly references his jewishness. The character was clearly based on Carl Icahn. “Icahn was born in Brooklyn and is ethnically Jewish.” ‘In the 1980s, Icahn developed a reputation as a "corporate raider" after profiting from the hostile takeover and asset stripping of Trans World Airlines.’ In the movie, Gekko does that to Bluestar Airlines.
