It's extremely old, back when lightbulbs we're first commercialized they were becoming so efficient at making them the light bulbs would last a long time meaning less profit for the companies so the major ones got together and agreed on how long each lightbulb would last before it broke and a new one had to be bought. I forget how many years this went on for but it was only recently discovered.
